Don’t ask me how to pronounce it or anything but we ate at 100 Montaditos which opened recently in the Waterford Lakes shopping center. They are a franchise that started in Islantilla, Spain in 2000 – they have several locations in Miami but this is the first in the Orlando area.
100 Montaditos is a quick service restaurant that specializes in tapas sized sandwiches called – you guessed it – Montaditos. We tried several Montaditos, a couple of their platters and appetizers. You order by filling out a sheet of paper located at the table with the number of each Montadito you want from the menu. I wish they had someone there to explain their concept to us as we ordered because we were going in blind and the menu isn’t all that clear – it wasn’t until we sat down at the table we realized we could have used the sheets they have to order. Everyone was friendly, however, and they answered questions when asked.
They have inside and outside seating but if you want to hear your name when they call you’ll have to sit inside because they don’t have outside speakers for their PA system.
We started with the Sangria and their signature spanish beer Mahou. They were both pretty basic the Sangria was from a bottle, Yago I think, they just added some fresh fruit to the glass.
All of the sandwiches and platters are served with fresh baked to order bread and that really is the star of most of what we ate – the fresh bread was really great. It was crunch on the outside and warm and chewy on the inside. It was a real compliment to the meat and cheese platters as well.
Pulled BBQ Pork Chipotle Ali Oli and Crispy onion
I decided to start my tiny sandwich eating going with a staple of BBQ cooking, the pulled pork sandwich. The pork was tender and the BBQ sauce on it was sweet, if somewhat basic. What pushed this sandwich passed that standard line for me was the Chipotle Ali Oli sauce. Not spicy, but adding some dynamic flavor that the sandwich was in definite need of.
Tomato, Mozzarella and Pesto
I broke with my normal sandwich tradition here and went vegetarian. The mozzarella was fresh and the flavor mixed with the tomato and delicious pesto for a refreshing stop off from my other, meatier options. I don’t think I would have enjoyed an entire large sandwich of this, but it was a perfect small offering.
Grilled Chicken, Guava and Bacon
This sounded a lot better than it was – the ratio of bacon and guava was off so it was so sweet that it was more like a pastry than a savory sandwich.
Calamari, Lettuce and Chipotle
Nothing too out of the ordinary on this option, but there is certainly something to be said for well made calamari. The calamari was breaded and fried, and was crispy on the outside while tender on the inside. The chipotle was mild, and I would have appreciated a bit more heat, but the flavor was still quite good.
Iberico Ham Platter and Blue, Brie & Manchego Cheese Platter
The ham and cheese platters were a selection of ham and cheeses served with fresh bread and accompaniments – olives and crushed tomatoes. They were a pretty good little charcuterie for the price.
There were a few things I’d like to see improved but 100 Montaditos does some great drink and sandwich specials during the week that make them a pretty good option if you’re in the Waterford Lakes area.
