We got Toasted this weekend! (not that kind of toasted) Toasted is a new fast casual restaurant dedicated to the art of grilled cheese. It’s located off of Aloma in the Winter Park Commons shopping center. If the day we visited was any indication there’s been a lack of quality grilled cheese in the area.
It is a small space for a restaurant but it has a lot of cute touches. The bright orange and blue color scheme, a periodic table of cheese types and a light fixture made of cheese graters makes the small space really cheerful.
The menu has a variety of grilled cheese sandwiches and burgers. And for the dirty hippie in you they even have a vegan menu (no offense to dirty hippies once a year we meet 80,000 hippies in Tennessee and don’t bathe for three days).
The service was really good, especially for fast casual. We were greeted at the door and the girl who took our order was smiling and several times while we were eating people checked on us and asked how the food was.
The only real downside to Toasted was that they were so packed there were no tables available. To be fair I’m not at all sure how they could fix this they had as many tables as they could safely have inside and out. They do have a take out and a curbside take away option if you call ahead and order if you aren’t a patient person.
Fig and Goat Grilled Cheese
The Fig and Grilled Cheese sandwich is toasted locally sourced artisan bread with Havarti, goat cheese, fig preserves, basil and honey. Goat cheese and fig is a classic combination and for good reason – it’s awesome. It was a really great marriage of the sweet and salty plus the gooey Havarti. The bread was all golden and toasted and just the right amount of butter (just like mom used to make only with real cheese not Kraft Singles). The basil gave it a nice finish without overpowering everything.
Sweet Heat Burger
The Sweet Heat Burger is a locally sourced artisan bun with a panko crusted turkey burger topped with sriracha mayo and a sweet slaw. The burger was pretty good, it didn’t have the same comfort food gooeyness that the grilled cheese did but the slaw was really nice and refreshing and the turkey burger was seasoned well and not dry at all. I’d definitely consider getting it again but I might ask for extra mayo to bring the spice factor up.
Natural Cut Fries
Toasted’s fries are natural cut and coated in rosemary and truffle oil. They’re also available just salted if you don’t like truffle oil (but if you don’t like truffle oil I’m not sure we can be friends anymore). They were really crispy and had a great crunch and the truffle oil added a nice flavor.
Toasted’s Mac & Cheese
Toasted’s Mac & Cheese is a baked macaroni with Jarlsberg, Extra Sharp Cheddar and my all time favorite cheese Gruyere. This was a really good mac and cheese and I’m not just saying that because I don’t want to hurt Gruyere’s feelings. It had that crunchy almost burnt (in a good way) cheese crust on the top and the cheeses paired really well together to give a great creamy consistency.
To drink they have the Cadillac of fountain drinks the Coca Cola Freestyle machine! Its a fun novelty when you’re getting a soda and it brings me back to my childhood where I used to mix all the fountain drinks together in one glass and dare my little brother to drink it (come on you know you did it too). Unfortunately Josh wouldn’t participate so I went with the classic (a coke is a coke it still tastes the same it just comes out of a shinier machine).
